Adult Education - Sunday Forum
A wide range of adult education programs are offered on Sunday mornings at 9:15 AM (between the two services) in the Rector's office.
On September 20, the Sunday Morning Forum program will begin. The forums will offer a variety of series that link faith and everyday life, including a new video series.
The first forum, starting on September 20, will focus on this summer’s General Convention of The Episcopal Church. For more information, please speak to Barbara Gardner or Christine Whittaker at 508-429-4248 or stmichholl@aol.com).
WEDNESDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY: Whom Do You Say That I Am? Do you wish you knew more about the Bible but aren’t sure where to start? Would you like to get together with others to discover how the Bible can help us in our everyday lives? This fall, Wednesday Morning Bible Study offers a chance to gather in a small group with Christine Whittaker to look at several passages from Luke’s gospel. There’s no homework and no prerequisite – just bring your interest in learning more about Jesus and yourself. The group starts Wednesday September 23. If there is sufficient interest, child care will be arranged. For more information, please speak to Christine Whittaker (508-429-4248 or stmichholl@aol.com).
ENCOUNTERING GOD STUDY GROUP The Encountering God Study Group will meet for the first time on Thursday evening, September 24 at 7:30 in the Meeting Room. This group will be using Diana Eck's book as a basis for talking about what we as Christians learn about God from other religious traditions. The group will also include meditation practice and visits to a Hindu temple, Sikh gurdwara and an Islamic center. If you would like to participate and have not yet told Christine, or if you have any questions about the group, please email Christine at stmichholl@aol.com to let her know of your interest.
COMPANIONS IN CHRIST Companions in Christ will begin on November 18, meeting on Wednesday evenings this Advent season. We will focus on the Psalms and will include time for meditation, discussion, and fellowship. Please leave a message with Amy at St. Michael’s.

Adult Choir
Under the direction of St. Michael's Choir Director, Allyn Phelps, the Choir sings a variety of classical and contemporary music at the Ten O'Clock Service.Preparation each week begins on Thursday evenings at 7:30 PM in the upstairs Kiely Choir Room, and resumes on Sunday morning at Nine O’Clock AM prior to the start of the Ten O’Clock Service. Anthems are sung in unison or parts (soprano, alto, tenor and bass). Hymns often include descants taken by the high sopranos. Availability of singers can affect the choice of anthems. If you enjoy a full sound each Sunday, please come and join us. During the Choir Summer Schedule of July and August, volunteer soloists or ensembles from the choir participate in the Nine O’Clock Services. They rehearse as schedules allow.

Book Club
Several times a year, parishioners gather to discuss a book everyone has read. Everyone is welcome to offer suggestions and join in the discussions.Current Book Club Selection Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, a Man who would Cure the World, by Tracy Kidder.
“And I was drawn to the man himself. He worked extraordinary hours. In fact, I don’t think he sleeps more than an hour or two most nights. Here was a person who seemed to be practicing more than he preached, who seemed to be living, as nearly as any human being can, without hypocrisy. A challenging person, the kind of person whose example can irritate you by making you feel you’ve never done anything as important, and yet, in his presence, those kinds of feelings tended to vanish. In the past, when I’d imagined a person with credentials like his, I’d imagined someone dour and self-righteous, but he was very friendly and irreverent, and quite funny. He seemed like someone I’d like to know, and I thought that if I did my job well, a reader would feel that way, too."
This is Tracy Kidder’s description of Paul Farmer, a specialist in infectious diseases and an attending physician at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. Farmer founded a hospital and health center in a small Haitian community, hours from the capital and at the end of a road in a region destitute even by Haiti’s standards. The health center was part of an extensive community-based health network linked to a hospital. For more than twenty years, Farmer spent many months there every year, often taking care of patients himself. The health network is now supported by a Boston-based foundation, Partners in Health, and Farmer has begun similar work in Rwanda. The challenging, inspiring story of Farmer and his work is well told by Kidder in Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, a Man who would Cure the World. Kidder’s best-selling book is the new selection for St. Michael’s Book Club.
